Freediving Australia: The Freediving Family Difference
At Freediving Family, our Australian courses are designed to make freediving accessible, safe, and community-driven. We run Molchanovs freediving courses across Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Brisbane, and the Central Coast, with occasional Deep Weekends held at Kilsby Sinkhole.
Our programs focus primarily on Molchanovs Discover Freediving and Wave 1 courses, creating the perfect environment for beginners and ocean lovers to experience freediving for the first time. More than just certifications, our courses are built around safe progression, confidence in the water, connection with the ocean, and building lasting friendships within a supportive community.
Why take a freediving course?
People come to freediving for all kinds of reasons — and no two journeys look exactly the same.
For some, it’s about exploring the ocean in a quieter, more natural way.
For others, it’s the feeling of calm, presence, and disconnection from the noise of everyday life.
Some are drawn to the challenge and personal growth, while others simply want to feel more comfortable and confident in the water.
Freediving can become a form of meditation, a way to connect with nature, a creative outlet through photography or exploration, or a pathway into a strong and supportive community.
Beyond the experience itself, freediving also offers a range of psychological and physiological benefits.
Breathwork and controlled exposure to relaxation under pressure have been shown to help reduce stress, improve mental focus, and support emotional regulation.
Physically, freediving can improve breath awareness, CO₂ tolerance, cardiovascular efficiency, and overall comfort in the water. Many people are surprised to discover that freediving is not about pushing limits, but about learning how to relax more deeply, move more efficiently, and build a stronger connection between mind and body. Whatever brings you to the water, freediving has a unique way of helping people slow down, reconnect, and discover something new about themselves along the way.
At the 2017 Freediving World Championships, Australian champion Adam Stern and current world record holder Alexey Molchanov were living together during the competition. Through countless conversations about training, safety, and education, they realized they shared the same vision: freediving education could be done better. Together, they set out to build a more modern, athlete-informed, and community-driven system - the beginning of what would become the Molchanovs Movement. Soon after, Chris Kim joined the team, and together they created what is now widely regarded as one of the world’s leading freediving education systems.

Part of the family
Taking your freediving course is just the beginning of your journey.
Once you join us, you become part of the Freediving Family community — a friendly, active group of divers who regularly connect for fun dives, training sessions, and trips away together. After completing your course, you’ll be added to our community group so you can stay in touch, join meetups, and keep diving with others from the network.
If you’ve trained with us, you’re also welcome to join our line training sessions whenever there is space available on the buoy. On Sundays, when our instructors are running courses, we often have room for certified divers to jump in and continue practicing in a supported, supervised environment.
In addition to the Molchanovs Base Training, you’ll also receive access to Freediving Family’s weekly online training sessions — guided Zoom breath-hold and breathwork practices designed to help you stay consistent and continue building your comfort and capacity from anywhere.
Our goal is simple: to give you as many pathways as possible to keep progressing and enjoying freediving, whether that’s through social fun dives, structured pool training, independent practice, or online sessions. More than anything, it’s the community that makes freediving special.
And for those who want to take things further, we also run international Deep Weeks — immersive freediving trips around the world for divers who are keen to train, explore, and connect on a deeper level.
