What Are Freediving Family Reunions?
Freediving Family Retreats are our way of bringing the friends and family we meet at Deep Weeks together once again to use what we learned to have fun and dive together in an incredible place somewhere in the world!
Each family reunion is a close knit and a unique experience for those that join. Space is very limited at these events which opens us up to one of a kind opportunities to explore the world with friends.
A true spearfishing mission.
After years of getting requests to run a spearing trip, we’ve finally got one on the books - and it’s one hell of a trip.
Freediving Family has teamed up with Aquatic Apes in Bali to put together this off-the-grid spearfishing adventure.
This is not your average dive trip, it’s a true expedition where the journey to get there is also part of the story. We’ll venture, via flights and ferries, into one of Indonesia’s most untouched regions, where clear water, wild reef systems, and thriving pelagic life create the perfect playground for experienced hunters.
This is a spearfisher’s paradise where we can expect to see a range of species including tuna, spanish mackerel, snapper and other reef fish!
Join us and a tight-knit crew of just 6 on one of our first spearing trips taking place after Deep Week Bali in May 2026!
We know what you’re thinking: remote Indonesia = less than lush accomm options.
BUT, unbelievably, our base has a small but well equipped accommodation. We’re talkin’ comfy private rooms, hot showers and fans to keep us cool at night. We spoil you, we really do.
Our hosts will also be preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner each day, including cooking up what we catch!
So don’t worry about roughing it for this one!

Who is this trip for?
With the remote location of the spot and potential challenges in the water, we have some prerequisites for this trip:
Intermediate to advanced level of spearfishing experience For this trip, we expect you to be comfortable diving off live boats, diving in current, and are familiar with safetying while spearing.
Minimum Wave 2 Certification or Equivalent You must have passed your Wave 2 or above for this trip and are comfortable diving at least 15m!
You’ve been to a Freediving Family event before As with all of our Family Reunions, you must have attended an event in Australia or a Deep Week.

What’s the schedule?
* Please note everything is weather dependent and the schedule is flexible.
📅 May 12: Depart from Ambon to destination
• We’ll plan to meet in Ambon (see details for how to get there in next section) and from there we’ll take a 6.5 hour ferry and a 3 hour taxi to reach our destination (I know it seems like a lot but it is soooo worth it).
• Once we arrive we’ll get settled into our accommodation and have dinner together.
🔱 May 13-16: 4x Dive days
• We’ll start May 13 with a dive briefing before heading out in the boats.
• Each day will look like this: sleep. spear. eat. repeat.
• The locals will cook up what we catch each day for a fresh fish feast
✈️ May 17: Return travel back to Ambon
• We’ll begin travel back to Ambon via the same way we came - taxi then ferry. And from Ambon everyone will take their own onward flights!
Getting to Ambon
With the remote location of this trip, there are a few configurations of flights, ferries and taxis to get there.
The plan is for everyone to convene on the island of Ambon, where we’ll then travel together via ferry and taxi to get to the spot (ferry and taxi are both included in the cost of the event).
Everyone is responsible for booking their flights to and from Ambon and we’ll be sending out all the relevant info in an event guide for getting those flights, including connection reccos and oversized baggage guidance!
The team will be traveling through Denpasar so if you’re coming from Deep Week Bali you’re welcome to join us on the journey, although flights are not included in the cost of this event. If you’re coming from outside of Bali, there direct flights from Jakarta to Ambon.

Not for this trip! This trip is built as a catch-and-cook style spearing trip, which means we’ll eat everything we catch and whatever we don’t eat will be donated to the local village where we’re staying.
So leave the freezer bags at home!

With the remote nature of this trip and challenges we can expect to face in the water, we are only opening this trip up to intermediate and advanced spearos!
But don’t worry, we have other beginner friendly spearing trips in the pipeline so keep your eyes on the website for updates! -
Unfortunately you have to have joined us for a Deep Week or one of our multi day events in Australia in the past to be able to join us at a Freediving Family Reunion.
We do this because, not to brag, but theres something special about our events that you just need to see to fully experience! But don’t worry, we will be running more and more reunions as we move ahead so you will have plenty of opportunities to join us in amazing places around the world.

Due to the unique nature of the events and how each one is individually planned, we are only able to transfer your deposit to a future Freediving Family Reunion and only if you have requested the deposit to be moved no closer than 8 weeks before the event begins.
In the event that you need to cancel your spot between 6 weeks and 2 weeks of the event starting, we do charge a fee equal to the event deposit. Any balance remaining can be applied to a future Family Reunion.
If you need to cancel within 2 weeks of the event starting, we cannot move your balance to a future event.We cannot issue refunds.

Any spearing equipment is included but any other freediving gear (i.e. wetsuit, fins, mask, etc.) will be available for rent. Lead will be provided but weight belts will not so please bring your own if you have it!

The water in Indonesia is pretty warm! Usually between 27-29C. So a 1.5-3mm will be perfect. Marissa likes to wear a 3mm open cell top and leggings for bottoms - but she runs cold!

Usually partners and family members are welcome to join any Freediving Family Reunion, even if they haven’t been to an event before. However with the nature of this one we ask that your partner or friend also be an intermediate or advanced spearo and have at least a Wave 2 or equivalent freediving certification!

You can pay an initial deposit to secure your spot and 6 weeks before the reunion begins the remaining balance is due.
With no deposit, there is no booking confirmed.
As soon as you book in, you will receive an email with a button that says “Pay Remainder Balance”. We ask that if you are booking on within 6 weeks of the event starting, you continue on to pay the remaining balance as soon as possible!
We ask the full payment to be covered six weeks before the start of the event.
You can also choose to pay in full upon checkout.
For this event, we have “add ons” available that will determine which bed you get along with if you want to sign up for the after reunion. These options are available upon checkout.

You can pay with a credit or debit card on our website. The payment is securely captured through Stripe. PayPal transfer or crypto are also options. If you would like to pay with PayPal or crypto, please contact Marissa at deepweek@freedivingfamily.com and she can assist you.

Nothing during the retreat is compulsory.
If you feel like you need some time to chill and relax by skipping a session, then by all means do so!
As Brandon always says, this is your vacation and you get to decide how much or little you want to do!
If you do decide to skip an activity, you are not entitled to a partial refund on the event.

The price includes ferry tickets and taxi to the spot, accommodation, all transport to scheduled activities, all meals once we're at the accommodation, boat fees, spearing equipment rental and a local guide. It does not include flights to Ambon, transport to or from other airports, meals during transit to the spot, or other diving gear hire. To ensure your booking is confirmed, please provide a $550 AUD non-refundable deposit. The remaining amount can be paid 8 weeks prior to the Family Reunion. Your transaction is secure through Stripe.
