Deep Week Greece

What is Deep Week?

Deep Week is a week long freediving course set in some of the world’s top freediving destinations. It brings the best freedivers, instructors and experts to one spectacular location for 7 full days of diving, workshops, yoga, meditation and community building!

Most accurately described as an underwater freediving festival, it’s the best place to make life-long freediving friends while getting a premier freediving education. There is truly no other event like it in the world, it’s a one-of-a-kind experience.

The training at Deep Week is suitable for all levels. We get all skill levels joining the event from absolute beginners, to freediving instructors wanting to up-skill, all the way up to freediving competitors seeking to improve their knowledge and technique.

Our Triumphant Return to Kalamata

For the first time in 2024, we came to Kalamata, Greece to run Deep Week! Kalamata is one of the hotspots for freedivers around the world as it is an easy travel destination for all of Europe, the costs are relatively low, and it has world class diving conditions! We were really excited to check it out and oh my goodness it did not disappoint!

We had fantastic diving conditions; no current, very little surface movement and the Taygetos Mountain range as our backdrop for every beautiful dive in the Med.

These near-perfect surface conditions mean that Kalamata is one of the best locations in the world for really working on depth progression, technique refining and relaxation.

Additionally, as Kalamata is a global hub for elite freedivers, the region is home to exceptional instructors who have trained and worked alongside some of the world’s top athletes—many of whom will be joining this event to share their expertise and experience with you. We are gathering an incredible team of elite divers to run workshops and share their knowledge with you during the week!

Beyond the elite coaching and structured training, the heart of the week remains connection, adventure, and shared experience. We’ll be hosting our signature excellent variety of workshops, social activities, and community events - including the Ninja Warrior obstacle course and other experiences designed to bring divers together from around the world and grow your personal Freediving Family.

We are so excited to be heading back and cant wait for to see you there!

We will be working to get some of the best competitive divers in the world to come give a few workshops during the week along with the classics you have come to know and love! Introducing a New Instructor Wave Level At Deep Week Greece

This year, Deep Week Greece will feature a pilot of our very first Instructor Wave Level - this is an unofficial Wave, designed for instructors and instructors-in-training.

Throughout the week, anyone taking this wave will train alongside high-level educators (W3I and up) to refine their teaching skills and diving both in and out of the water. Alongside daily diving, participants will have access to exclusive workshops developed by Molchanovs Instructor Trainers covering topics such as effective coaching, communication and presence, freediving business development, and leadership within the sport.

The goal of the Instructor Wave is simple: to help instructors grow not only as divers, but as educators, mentors, and leaders within the freediving community.

Please note that this level is not an instructors course. This level is for already certified instructors that are interested in leveling up their teaching abilities or W3 certified divers that are interested in becoming an instructor. If you are interested in becoming an instructor, please click the link below to sign up for the instructor course happening after Deep Week Greece!

Taking this wave also allows you the opportunity to complete a Molchanovs Instructor crossover during the week, with your instructors certification from another agency. For the crossover you’ll also need to:

  • Attend two online zoom sessions prior to Deep Week where we will cover the Molchanovs instructor standards

  • Complete the entry and final exams along with all of the student exams for W1 - W3

  • Pay an additional 100usd certification fee

The Venue

This Deep Week is going to be really cool because this event doesn’t have a “typical” venue like we do in other locations. For this Deep Week, the small town of Kalamata itself will be our venue so we can experience it’s local cultural charm!

Our workshops will be head near Kalamata Freediving Academy and Holy Mug Coffee shop. For accommodation, there is no official “Main Event Hotel” option but if you check out your booking app of choice (AirBnB, Expedia, booking.com, etc) there are a lot of available places around that you can select! Just try and stay close to the Kalamata Freediving Academy/Holy Mug area and you will be good to go! You can also post in the whatsapp group chat (which you get added to when you book) and ask where others are staying so you can plan to share accommodation together if that suits!

In order to make sure that you are around for all Deep Week activities, we encourage you to arrive on the 11th of September at latest (as we will dive the morning of the 12th) and then plan to depart on the 20th of September as we will have our after party the night of the 19th!

Getting There & Around

Kalamata has an international airport (KLX) with regular domestic flights from Athens. You can also take a bus from Athens as it’s just a 2 and a half hour drive from the Athens International Airport. As we get closer to the event, our WhatsApp chat will start discussing when people are arriving and many of you will be able to group together and share buses. Nothing like a good road trip through the beautiful mountains of Greece to get the party started! Once you put your deposit down and book your spot, you will get instructions on how to add yourself into this group and we can start discussing ride sharing!

Getting around on foot is pretty easy and so is renting a taxi! Pedal bikes are also a great way to get around and there are a few places that rent so just search around online!

FAQs

  • Of course! If you are just getting started in your Freediving journey, we offer Wave 1 courses which are beginner courses. You will learn all the basics of this sport, physiology, safety, and equalization.

Most importantly, you will have a whole week to practice your skills and get more comfortable in the water. No rushing through a 2-day course. Get ready to immerse yourself in freediving with us!

  • If you want to have a week of line training, workshops, pool sessions and meet amazing people in a stunning seaside town, then yes!

It doesn’t matter how much experience you have freediving, everyone is welcome!

We have students that range from beginner to competitive. We offer a wave certification during the week but we believe it is far more important that you spend your time working on your technique and learn as much as you can from our cast of amazing instructors!

So, if you have an adventurous spirit, you are keen to dive in some of the worlds best diving conditions, and you want to enjoy some delicious Greek dinners each night, this Deep Week is the right fit for you!

  • All of our courses are Molchanovs Courses and, during this event, we are offering Wave 1 to Wave 4 courses!

We are excited because Kalamata is where the world championships of freediving are often held because of the incredible conditions here! Aside from diving in a deep pool, there are very few places in the world where the water is like glass and the current is minimal!

  • Your partner is welcome to join you and participate in our morning yoga, workshops or afternoon meditation sessions! Basically anything that we run where they are dry and aren’t in the water, they can join!

  • The price includes all workshops, training and certification costs. Staff, set-up and facilities to run the event are covered by your ticket.

Deep Week does not include accommodation, travel expenses, visa fees, meals or gear hire.

We do recommend that you purchase travelers insurance!

  • We are unable to issue cash refunds.

For any circumstances that prevent you from coming to the event, we can transfer your payment (deposit or full payment) to a future event if you give us at least 8 weeks notice before the start of the event. If you cancel within 8 weeks of the event beginning, there is a cancellation fee equal to the event deposit.

If you cancel within 2 weeks of the event starting, your full payment is non-refundable and non-transferrable.

For more info, check our terms of service listed below in the footer of this page.

  • Water is between 26 and 28c this time of year so a 3mm should be plenty. But if you’re prone to getting cold we would recommend considering a 5mm! In the morning, the mountains do block the sun so it can be a bit chilly but once the sun hits, the water warms up really fast!

We suggest bringing a two piece suit so you have an easier time flooding it to cool down or you can swap out a pair of leggings for your bottoms if you get too warm.

You can also bring a rash guard, scuba diving wetsuit, triathlon wetsuit or surf wetsuit if you get colder and pop it over your main suit!

Basically the water is warm! Plan accordingly if you know you run hot or cold!

  • Nothing during Deep Week is compulsory! It’s your vacation after all!

If you feel like you need some time to chill and relax by skipping a workshop or want to go out for dinner in town with a group of friends you made, then by all means do so!
