What are Freediving Family Expeditions?
Our expeditions are a chance to explore some of the most incredible underwater destinations on the planet alongside a community of adventurous, ocean-loving humans who are just as obsessed with freediving as you are. Think breathtaking dive sites, inquisitive marine life, local food, spontaneous adventures, and the kind of memories that somehow only happen when you throw a bunch of freedivers together in a beautiful part of the world.
While our mailing list and past students get first access to registrations, many of our expeditions are also open to the wider freediving community — so whether you’ve trained with us before or are joining us for the first time, you’re invited to come dive, explore, and experience it all with us.
Each trip is a close knit and a unique experience for those that join. Space is very limited at these events which opens us up to one of a kind opportunities to explore the world with new friends.
An ocean filled with wings
Every spring, literally millions of mobula rays gather in the nutrient-rich waters of Baja California Sur, creating a wildlife phenomenon unlike anything else on the planet. Vast schools of rays fill the ocean, often leaping from the surface by the hundreds, while dolphins, sea lions, whales, and other predators move in to take advantage of the abundance.
Over three days on the water, we'll search for these incredible aggregations. While mobula rays are the stars of the show, Baja is famous for its unpredictable wildlife encounters. There's always the possibility of crossing paths with dolphins, whales, whale sharks, and, if we're exceptionally lucky, residential orcas.
There’s only room for 13 on this expedition taking place right after Deep Week Mexico at the end of May 2027! If witnessing one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth has always been at the top of your bucket-list, then read on.

Here’s the schedule:

☀️ May 25 - Arrival day to La Paz
• After arriving in La Paz, we’ll drive one hour to our accommodation in La Ventana!
🤿 May 26, 27, 28 – Dive day
• Each day we’ll depart from the hotel at around 7am, drive 20 minutes to where we’ll load onto the boat and start looking for rays!
• Expect to return sometime between 2-5pm, dependent on how lucky we get - after all we are at the whims of wildlife!
• Fruit, burritos, water, sodas and other snacks will all be on the available each day and are included in the cost of the event.

• Morning departure to everyones onward travel!
If you’re coming from Deep Week Mexico, we’ll all be traveling together on the 25th from Valladolid!
Meet your hosts
This adventure will be guided by Freediving Family’s Brandon Reed and our certified local guides Surya Lecona and Alejandro Lemus!
Brandon is our Director of Education and rarely misses an opportunity to get in the water with marine wildlife, from tiny nudibranchs to the ocean's largest giants.
Suri and Lemus are our local partners for Deep Week Mexico and also certified wildlife guides in Mexico!
Who is this trip for?
Here are some considerations to help you decide if this trip is for you!
You don’t mind long days on a boat We'll be exploring the Gulf side of the Sea of Cortez, which generally means calm seas, minimal swell, and comfortable surface conditions. That said, wildlife encounters are never guaranteed, and we'll spend up to 6–7 hours on the boat each day maximizing our chances of finding the rays. If you're happy spending long days on the water in search of unforgettable encounters, you'll fit right in.
Minimum Wave 1 Certification or Equivalent The rays are fairly accessible and can usually be found in 3-10m of water but this is still a freediving trip and we require a Wave 1 cert (or equivalent) to join!
You’re ready to come with the spirit of adventure As with all of our expeditions, this is a really special opportunity to experience something incredible in the wild with a group of what are likely to become lifelong friends. So as long as you come with an open mind, open heart and a sense of adventure, we’ll take care of the rest.

The cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula are among the most extraordinary diving environments on Earth. Revered by the ancient Maya as sacred portals to the underworld, these crystal-clear freshwater caverns offer a surreal underwater world of limestone formations, sunlit passages, haloclines, and hidden chambers. Throughout the week, we'll explore a handpicked selection of our favorite cenotes, chosen from thousands across the region.
This is by far our most picturesque Deep Week location.
Where are we staying?
Nestled between the desert and the Sea of Cortez, La Ventana is a laid-back adventure-hub known for its stunning scenery, incredible marine life, and Baja charm.
We’ll be staying at the ChangoMango Pod Hotel in La Ventana. Reminder that 4x nights of accommodation is included in the cost of the event! Everyone will get their own room, or should we say pod! The space is also equipped with a pool, jacuzzi and coworking space!

Yes you can! All of our expeditions are first opened to prior event attendees before we open them up to the general public! But after that they are open to anyone who’s keen to come along for an adventure :)

During our Family Expeditions, we don’t offer certifications. You must be at least Wave 1 certified or the equivalent to be able to attend these events!

Due to the unique nature of the events and how each one is individually planned, we are only able to transfer your deposit to a future Freediving Family Expedition and only if you have requested the deposit to be moved no closer than 8 weeks before the event begins.
In the event that you need to cancel your spot between 8 weeks and 2 weeks of the event starting, we do charge a fee equal to the event deposit. Any balance remaining can be applied to a future Family Expedition.
If you need to cancel within 8 weeks of the event starting, we cannot move your balance to a future event.We cannot issue refunds.

Basic snorkeling gear is included (mask, snorkel, fins and short-sleeved wetsuit) but any other equipment is not available and will need to be brought! Just let us know ahead of time what kind of equipment you require!
Lead will be provided but weight belts will not so please bring your own if you have it! -
The water temp in Baja this time of year is around 22-25C so we recommend a 3mm suit (or 5mm if you get cold easily).
Keep in mind we’ll be on a boat so having something like a wind-breaker or poncho towel will also be handy.

Nothing during the retreat is compulsory.
If you feel like you need some time to chill and relax by skipping a dive session, then by all means do so!
As Brandon always says, this is your vacation and you get to decide how much or little you want to do!
If you do decide to skip an activity, you are not entitled to a partial refund on the event.

The price includes all boat trips, guides, accommodation, all transport to scheduled activities, basic snorkeling equipment, and lunches on the boat. It does not include flights, visas, gratuity, travel insurance breakfasts, dinners, or alcoholic beverages. To ensure your booking is confirmed, please provide a non-refundable deposit.
